Opioid Prescriptions for Acute and Chronic Pain Management Among Medicaid Beneficiaries

More than half of Medicaid beneficiaries receive an opioid for pain management for either a dental (17.3%) or orthopedic-related (34.8%) complaint and emergency department providers are more likely to provide them. Almost 19% of patients filled the prescriptions within 14-days of receipt. This article highlights prescription patterns for pain-related complaints, both acute and chronic, and highlights the role that emergency providers have in driving prescription rates.
