Care for the Incarcerated: Barriers to Better Oral Health
“After we left, we couldn’t have any more than two aspirin. And of course, that was kind of traumatic. I’ve probably had about four extractions while I was incarcerated,” says K.C. Uber, recounting a tooth that was pulled while he was incarcerated. A new CareQuest Institute report reveals that 50% of incarcerated individuals had a dental problem during the time they were imprisoned — and care for those individuals, like Uber, can typically mean tooth extractions. Uber and Isabel Bravo, another oral health advocate, detail their personal experiences of accessing oral health care while in the prison system in an accompanying video.
