Sessions

MassHealth: Teledentistry Policy

This session will explore the current state of teledentistry policy within Massachusetts. It will examine how teledentistry is supported by MassHealth and the components of the MassHealth teledentistry policy as it applies to dental care. Participants will gain valuable insights and engage in discussions shaping the future of remote dental care delivery.

Objectives:

  • Understand the key components of the MassHealth telehealth policy as it applies to dental care, including that a participating provider has the option to deliver any medically necessary covered service by telehealth.

  • Recognize that under the MassHealth telehealth policy, providers have the flexibility and responsibility to determine what covered services are clinically appropriate to deliver by telehealth and ensuring that the same standard of care can be met as if the service was delivered in-person.

  • Appreciate telehealth’s potential to expand dental access in a meaningful way for Massachusetts residents, including for those with MassHealth coverage and for those who are not served by the traditional dental system.

Teledentistry examples from NNOHA Collaborative

This session will review lessons learned from the NNOHA teledentistry collaborative. It will provide examples of how to utilize teledentistry to increase oral health services in practices. Participants will gain insights on how to use more efficient practice systems, patient engagement, provider recruitment/retention, and clinical improvements when implementing teledentistry.

Objectives:

  • Explain how teledentistry can be used as a strategy to close care gaps and create pathways toward oral health equity.

  • Discuss how FQHCs are using teledentistry to increase access to oral health services.

  • Identify lessons learned from the NNOHA Teledentistry Learning Collaborative participants.

Roundtable Discussion

During this session, participants will engage in small group discussions on the application of teledentistry in their practices. Participants will be asked to explore and discuss various uses of teledentistry and how to utilize teledentistry to increase oral health access. Each roundtable will be asked to report a summary of their discussion to the larger group.

Objectives:

  • Discuss how teledentistry can be used as a strategy in dental practices.

  • Identify strategies to implement teledentistry to improve access in dental practices.

Presentations from PRIDE Grant Participants

During this session, participants of the Promoting Remote Initiatives in Dental Engagement (PRIDE) grant will present their grant work. Community health center site teams will discuss their teledental workflows and lessons learned in implementing teledentistry. Dental school site teams will discuss their findings from their literature reviews focused on portable/mobile care and teledentistry.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the use and implementation of tele-dental/video visits at the community health center setting and how to utilize within a portable dentistry program.

  • Discuss the workflow for our portable visits in various community settings and discuss synchronous vs. asynchronous visit types.

  • Explain the methodologies used to complete literature reviews focused on portable/mobile and teledentistry care and identify the summary findings.

The use and application of teledentistry in practice

This session will explore how private practice providers can utilize teledentistry within their practices. It will examine applications of teledentistry within private practice dental clinics. Participants will gain insights on how to increase access to patients using teledentistry.

Objectives:

  • Identify the fundamentals of telemedicine and teledentistry, including current applications.

  • Share information about coding and resources available for practitioners who want to start using teledentistry in their practice.

  • Discuss how technology, including AI, is being used in teledentistry.

  • Explore opportunities to increase access, improve communication, and achieve the quadruple aim of healthcare using teledentistry.
