Boston Children’s Hospital is dedicated to improving and advancing the health and well-being of children around the world through clinical care, biomedical research, medical education, and community engagement. Children’s is home to the world’s largest pediatric research enterprise and is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School. Children’s treats more children with rare diseases and complex conditions than any other hospital.
This proposal outlines a pilot project that Children’s is conducting to explore the feasibility of doing teledentistry oral health assessments for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a school-based setting and with the assistance of Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (graduate level certification in behavior analysis). The specific population to be impacted will be children ages 8 – 17 with ASD who are enrolled at the Amego school in Franklin, MA through teledentistry. From a care transformation perspective, this study continues important work around the delivery of oral health services to a vulnerable population in a nontraditional setting, alongside nondental professionals. Additionally, there will be intentional use of telehealth tools to further build evidence that supports this mode of care.
This proposal is one of 10 selected finalists for the Community and Care Transformation RFP.
