Established by a network of community volunteers in 1971 following federal assimilation and Indian relocation programs, Texas Native Health (TNH) is one of 41 remaining urban Indian organizations (UIO) operating under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. It serves as the sole safety net provider of medical, dental, mental health, career development, and cultural services to American Indians and Alaska Natives in Texas. With over 51 years of experience, TNH has developed innovative and culturally appropriate approaches to care. It receives over 22,000 medical visits annually, positioning itself as a leader among urban Indian and tribal health providers.
TNH has successfully contracted with Indian Health Services since 1974 to provide health services to Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Texas. Services include primary care, immunization, dental, pharmacy, and behavioral health programming. Notably, TNH offers a diabetes prevention and management program funded by the federal Special Diabetes for Indians (SDPI) Grant offers nutrition consultation, foot and eye exams, support groups, and physical wellness activities. Other programs address tobacco cessation, hypertension, asthma, wellness exams, influenza vaccinations, and STI screenings. Additionally, TNH has developed career development and youth education programs, including a local youth advisory board, the first K-12 education program for Native American youth in the state, and a comprehensive employment program for individuals seeking to overcome poverty and foster career upward mobility.
TNH maintains over 150 partnerships that include tribal nations, universities, and hospital systems. Through the proposed project, TNH will engage, collaborate, and lead with these stakeholder groups in data collection, culturally competent care, and knowledge sharing.
Throughout this project, TNH will focus on serving multiple generations of Native Americans in Texas, including children, adults, and elders requiring dental care. To achieve these innovative outcomes, TNH will focus on the following priority activities:
Recruiting a Dental Sterilization Technician and Assistant
Medical-dental integration
Technology integration
Cultural proficiency
The budget for this proposal is $125,000, which represents 3% of TNH’s overall budget. Funding will support sterilization techs and indirect funds.
This proposal is one of 10 selected finalists for the Community and Care Transformation RFP.
