Impacts Beyond the Mouth
Connecting Oral Health and Overall Well-being
Growing evidence highlights the significant connection between oral health and overall well-being.
- Reduced mortality from aspiration pneumonia can be achieved through improved oral hygiene among medically fragile seniors, and better oral care in hospital settings has been shown to lower the incidence of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
- Serious complications such as preterm births and preeclampsia are linked to gum disease in pregnant women.
- A higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is associated with having 10 years of chronic gum disease (periodontitis).
- Diabetes management is harder for people with untreated gum disease, which complicates their ability to control blood glucose levels.
These findings underscore the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene as a crucial aspect of overall health. Despite its importance, millions of people lack access to oral health care.
