Impacts Beyond the Mouth

Connecting Oral Health and Overall Well-being

Growing evidence highlights the significant connection between oral health and overall well-being.

  • Reduced mortality from aspiration pneumonia can be achieved through improved oral hygiene among medically fragile seniors, and better oral care in hospital settings has been shown to lower the incidence of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
  • Serious complications such as preterm births and preeclampsia are linked to gum disease in pregnant women.
  • A higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is associated with having 10 years of chronic gum disease (periodontitis).
  • Diabetes management is harder for people with untreated gum disease, which complicates their ability to control blood glucose levels.

These findings underscore the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene as a crucial aspect of overall health. Despite its importance, millions of people lack access to oral health care.

Our Cross-Cutting Strategies

We pursue investment opportunities that drive progress in these five areas:

Health and Racial Equity
We fund initiatives that account for, contextualize, and address historic imbalances in power, representation, infrastructure, and outcomes within all systems.

Social Determinants of Health
We provide grants to organizations working to advance structural changes that align care, community, and policies in a way that addresses social risk factors and enables oral health value-based care.

Community-Centered Measurement
We invest in community-centered data strategies that can influence policy and compel systems change.

Learning and Capacity Building
We strengthen the ability of our partners to drive systemic change by funding multilateral learning efforts.

Innovation in Oral Health
We support oral health care delivery innovations that reduce inequities and increase parity in access and outcomes.

See the Work in Action

Recognizing that those negatively impacted by the oral health system have historically been, and continue to be, excluded from influencing and driving solution development, CareQuest Institute emphasizes the critical importance of engaging communities to transform oral health.
