Part One: Advocacy 101

Are you new to advocacy? This session is for you! Learn the fundamentals of advocacy, including the difference between advocacy vs. lobbying, how a bill becomes law, and effective ways to engage policymakers. If you're already familiar with these concepts, this session can serve as a refresher course. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Roy Miller, founder and president, American Children’s Campaign, Inc.

A passionate policy advocate, Roy has been effective in bringing to light a range of children’s health issues, including Florida’s underinvestment in Healthy Start and, more recently, oral health.  With American Children’s Campaign, Roy introduced a new advocacy and public will model operating within the framework of charitable environments. He specializes in all phases of political consulting, from strategy to grassroots outreach.

Part Two: Election Engagement
Wednesday, July 17 | 1–3 p.m. ET

The 2024 election is a critical opportunity for OPEN to help candidates understand the need to address oral health in their commitments to health care. In this session, you will get a first look at new poll results on voters’ viewpoint of broad oral health issues. You'll leave with tools and resources to engage your candidates and legislators throughout the election season. Now is our time to lay the groundwork for new champions in Congress!

Xavier is a longtime advocate for community-driven initiatives to achieve health equity and environmental justice. Taking an expansive view of what constitutes good health and community wellness, he works in partnership to enable opportunities across the social determinants of health.

Maya Goldman, health care policy reporter, Axios

Maya is a journalist who focuses on health policy issues in Congress and the federal agencies, including Medicare payment, telehealth, and price transparency.
