United Sikhs, working in partnership with the New York University Prevention Research Center, will plan a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) oral health program using a PRECEED-PROCEED model to provide the community with the experience needed to improve oral health among its members. While current data suggest significant barriers to oral health access for the Sikh community in New York City and New Jersey, there is minimal understanding of the challenges faced by this population. United Sikhs will use their Community Education and Empowerment (CEED) program to empower individuals through education, training and community development as a strategy for chronic disease prevention. They will develop a program to improve the oral health of the Sikh community.
