National: Support to the Pew Charitable Trusts to develop Spanish language fluoridation materials to help ensure that the benefits of community water fluoridation are more fully realized in Latino American and Spanish-speaking communities. As part of this project, the Pew’s Children’s Dental Campaign will conduct focus groups and communications research to identify the unique concerns Latino Americans have about fluoridation and oral health, determine the most effective messages to address these concerns, and then use this research to produce water fluoridation materials in Spanish. By developing culturally sensitive resources and improving engagement strategies, this project will help increase the understanding of and support for fluoridation and help improve oral health in Latino American communities, engaging both community members and the medical and dental professionals who care for them. These activities align with the Oral Health 2020 goal 4 of eradicating dental disease in children and the target of having 75% of children reach age 5 without a cavity. $125,000 will help pay for the focus group research, message-testing, and polling as well as the creation of a Spanish language version of the iLikeMyTeeth.org website, and the development and translation of pro-fluoride tools and resources.
