National: This investment supports the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry to hold a conference regarding innovations in the prevention and treatment of early childhood caries (ECC). The conference - which will be held on October 23-24, 2014 - will gather national and international experts to assess the evidence, as well as the potential of emerging approaches that can reduce ECC. It will advance and synthesize the science regarding primary and secondary methods to prevent ECC and establish policies and protocols for practitioners to follow regarding non-restorative treatment of the disease. $39,700 will help cover meeting and travel expenses, honoraria, office operations, and communications/marketing materials. The proposal aligns with the Oral Health 2020 goal 4 of eradicating dental disease in children and the target of having 75% of children reach age 5 without a cavity.
