This investment supports El Centro de Corazon, a nonprofit social service organization, to provide oral health care services for uninsured and/or underinsured adults that live in Houston’s East End community. In 2013, El Centro served 1,539 individuals through over 4,419 dental visits. A vast majority of those were Hispanic, with over 80% living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Index Level and having no insurance. Grant funds will be used to purchase dental equipment to improve service efficiency and effectiveness. El Centro’s total cost to upgrade old equipment totals $20,000. Grant funds provided through the Community Response Fund will improve access to care and increase El Centro’s capacity to provide oral health services for an underserved population.
