This investment supports Vista Community Clinic (VCC) to implement and deliver a community based oral disease prevention intervention strategy. Leveraging the voice of the community to inform this strategy, VCC uses a lay community health worker model to deliver an oral health education intervention to members of the Mexican migrant worker population in Southern California. This community based participatory research program is providing an evidence base around the effectiveness of community developed interventions in the prevention of oral disease, aiming to increase oral health knowledge, literacy, and improved self-care behaviors among Mexican migrant families. $75,000 will support program staff, materials, travel, and meeting expenses, in addition to a robust outcomes-based evaluation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the intervention in the Mexican migrant worker population. Grant funds provided through the NCC Oral Health Initiative to support community engagement in oral disease prevention.
