This investment supports the United Way of St. Mary’s County/Southern Maryland Mission of Mercy (SMMOM) to provide free access to oral health care services for adults with high need due to unemployment, lack of insurance, and lack of access to adequate care or treatment in the Southern Maryland region. In 2012, SMMOM provided $855,000 of care for 650 adults, and this year they hope to serve 800-1,000 patients. $10,000 will support the SMMOM to rent dental equipment and supplies for the two-day event. Grant funds provided through the Community Response Fund to improve access to care for an underserved population and leverage this event as an advocacy tool to highlight the severity of unmet health care needs in Southern Maryland.
