California: Support to Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice - LA) to act as a lead convener in California as a part of the Grassroots Engagement Strategy. In Year Two of this work, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA (Advancing Justice-LA) engaged with its Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Oral Health 2020 Core Group (Core Group), which consists of ten health justice organizations. Advancing Justice-LA expanded the local network among AANHPI low-income, limited-English proficient (LEP), and immigrant communities across the state of California by joined other statewide health justice partners, AANHPI community leaders, and members to host focus groups on oral health issues, workshops on health equity programs, and sponsored health fairs, festivals, and community events to build critical consciousness of consumers on oral health justice and advocacy. Advancing Justice-LA also hosted convenings and press conferences to highlight both general health and oral health access issues throughout the year. Advancing Justice-LA, its Core Group, and the wider Health Justice Network has been monitoring and discussing how the post-November elections have changed the political landscape of health care reform overall and how the new administration will affect the progress made on health equity and oral health both nationally and in California. Advancing Justice-LA and its Oral Health Core Group have decided to revisit some of the previous oral health goals, to make adjustments to the Community-Driven Oral Health Plan, and to take into account the Y1 and Y2 research data to develop three priorities. Oral Health 2020 investment of $100,800 will be used to support implementation of the Community-Driven Oral Health Plan, which includes the priorities 1) To increase CA policymakers’ understanding about the importance of safeguarding oral health services, 2) To strengthen Core Group and HJN partner understanding about the state of oral/dental health issues in California and the significance of oral health to overall health and encourage coordinated action, and 3) To transform the diverse AANHPI communities' perception of the value of oral health to overall health through a culturally and linguistically appropriate oral health public awareness and education campaign. This proposal aligns with the Oral Health 2020 Goal 6 of improving the public perception of the value of oral health to overall health and the target that oral health is increasingly included in health dialogue and public policy.
