California: This Oral Health 2020 funding renewal supports the Center for Oral Health’s (COH) continued efforts to development and pilot a comprehensive, school-based oral health care model, leveraging funds from the U.S Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), DQF, and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. Over the past three years COH has documented and continuously improves the model, which they have packaged in a detailed operation manual made available to all partners providing dental care services to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Through the operation and evaluation of two school-based clinics within LAUSD, COH highlights the critical need for better data sharing provisions and increased funding for school-based health programs will result in oral health program sustainability and improved student health and achievement outcomes. This work requires additional refinement to ensure long-term financial sustainability, which will be achieved during this calendar year. For the renewal, Center for Oral Health (COH) will continue efforts focused on sustainability of its School-Based Oral Health Care Services model in the LAUSD. This is paramount to maintaining efforts to incorporate oral health into the primary education system in LAUSD, the second largest district in the U.S. For 2017, COH will also increase efforts around promoting equitable school district policies that advance school-based oral health. COH will work with LAUSD School Board and the LA Trust for Children’s Health to incorporate a new district policy that allows dental providers to access insurance data, specifically Denti-Cal, the Medicaid program in CA, from the district. Accessing insurance data will help COH maximize billing for dental care services rendered at LAUSD school sites, which today are provided without compensation. $275,030 will be used to support personnel time necessary to manage the operations of the project, coordination and planning of the project; managing relationships with the different LAUSD personnel, and collaborative partners; travel and contracted services; and administrative costs associated with the project's implementation, including printing, office space, communications materials, and supplies. This proposal aligns with the Oral Health 2020 goal of incorporating oral health into the primary education system and the target of having the 10 largest school districts incorporate oral health into their systems.
