National: This investment supports the Center for Health Policy Development d/b/a National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) to enhance and disseminate information related to policy innovations in oral health and dental care, and to broaden and enrich discussion of oral health and dental care topics among state policymakers. Specifically, NASHP will convene a one-day preconference in conjunction with its Annual State Health Policy Conference, which will be held in October 2016. This event will engage state officials in thinking deeply about innovative strategies to address oral health and dental care, and how such innovations present opportunities to help states realize overarching objectives of better care, better health, and lower costs. NASHP will disseminate key findings from the preconference via its Health Policy Blog, and encourage continuation of the discussion in its State Refor[u]m online community. In addition, NASHP will conduct an in-depth study of the development and implementation of integrated oral health and physical health care in the context of Oregon’s health system transformation initiative, specifically in the state’s Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs). The results of this study will help translate the information and lessons learned in Oregon in a manner that is useful to policy makers in other states. This work will primarily contribute to achieving the Oral Health 2020 goal of integrating oral health into person-centered healthcare, by providing a platform for disseminating information on and stimulating discussion regarding effective models of care in the delivery of oral health in the context of comprehensive, integrated care. $212,759 will support the staffing and convening capacity necessary to implement the initiative.
