This investment supports the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) to maintain and update the Smiles for Life Curriculum in order to align with current clinical protocol and relevance for nationwide use. Specifically, STFM will update the curriculum to reflect current medical knowledge and clinical practice guidelines, maintaining the accuracy and relevance of the tool; develop one additional educational module: "Gap bridgers," module with focus on Community Health Workers/Promotoras and home visiting personnel; and leverage new and existing communication channels to widely promote the Smiles for Life Curriculum throughout 2016. It is the nation's preeminent and most widely used oral health curriculum specifically aimed at primary care providers. Despite its reach, the percentage of primary care providers actually implementing some of the oral health integration strategies into their work has only risen moderately. Much work still remains. The Smiles for Life Curriculum is a key strategy of the work to integrate oral health into all aspects of health care. $144,700 will be used to support staff time to edit the curriculum, travel costs to convene the Steering Committee, communications expenses, and other administrative costs associated with the project's implementation. This proposal aligns with the Oral Health 2020 Goal of integrating oral health into person-centered healthcare, and the target that, by 2020, oral health is integrated into at least 50% of emerging person-centered care models.
