This qualitative study authored by CareQuest Institute and Apple Tree Dental explores dental providers’ experiences with AI radiograph annotation software.
Key findings, published in JDR Clinical & Translational Research, include:
- Providers realized that AI radiograph annotation software could not replace the critical thinking skills a provider applies to radiographs, clinical findings, and patients’ needs to arrive at diagnoses and a treatment plan.
- Providers reported that using the AI software improved their confidence in diagnosing and decision-making, and they found it useful to identify early signs of disease and engage patients in conversations about their oral health.
- Structured onboarding, interprofessional collaboration, and continuous feedback are needed to ensure sustainable adoption of AI technologies in dental practice.
Study participants included six dentists, two dental hygienists, and three advanced dental therapists across five Apple Tree Dental clinics in Minnesota.
